Parent Participation

The family commitment to Indigo is one of the most important aspects of our program. Parent/guardian involvement benefits the children and helps to create a vital sense of community for all of us.

Research has shown overwhelmingly that family involvement in children's learning results in the following benefits for the children:

• Better academic achievement

• Positive attitude toward school and lifelong learning

• Positive social behaviors with peers and adults

• Consistent attendance

Parents/guardians make the following commitments when they join the Indigo community:

1. Support your child's love of learning at home and at school.

2. Volunteer in your child's classroom 3 hours a week if you have one child and 2 hours a week per child if you have more than one child in the program. (Maximum of 6 hours.)

3. Choose and contribute to a classroom job. Some jobs are year-long, others are completed during one part of the year.

4. Choose and contribute to a community job for the year.

5. Participate in our all-school meeting once a month (usually on a weekday evening).

6. Chaperone 3 field trips per child for the year.

7. Contribute 4 hours per year of maintenance work, such as helping teachers set up their classrooms, working in the garden, etc.

8. Take part in annual parent training courses.

9. Contribute $400.00 (K-5), $500.00 (6-7) per child per year to the Indigo PTA. This "cost of participation" helps pay for such things as field trips, materials, enrichment activities, and additional staff for enrichment programs. No child is denied enrollment because of inability to pay. In case of financial hardship, families may apply for a scholarship.

The fulfillment of these commitments by all our families, in partnership with the teachers and students, creates the dynamic learning community that is Indigo.
